Are your clients wanting a change?

Recent insights from an article in IFA Magazine, based on a survey by Investec Wealth & Investment ( UK) with 535 participants, revealed a significant trend in the financial advisory sector.

The survey indicates that one in three individuals is contemplating a change in their financial advisor. This statistic is noteworthy, particularly as 82% of these individuals are considering this change within the next year, and a staggering 92% within two years. Merely 4% anticipate a shift in advisors beyond this two-year period.

What stands out in these findings is that the quality of advice isn’t the primary concern driving this change, most consumers are happy with the advice they are receiving. Rather, the evolving landscape reflects a shift in client expectations and market dynamics.

In this era of market volatility, fuelled by various geopolitical events, clients are becoming increasingly informed and discerning. Most IFAs I speak to, say that clients are definitely becoming more demanding.

In December, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) stated.

“We want consumers of all wealth levels to be able to make good investment decisions. We want people to invest with confidence, understanding the risks and the protection involved.”

The introduction of the Consumer Duty further obligates financial advisors to effectively enable and support their clients in achieving their financial goals.

This will inevitably lead to enhanced information dissemination, making clients more open to considering alternative advisors who may seem to offer better returns or align more closely with their evolving needs.
In light of these developments, financial advisors who proactively embrace these changes, especially the Consumer Duty, find themselves in a favourable position to attract new clients, and we are already seeing evidence of this.

My recommendation, consistent over time, is for advisors to integrate technology and enhance client engagement strategies. Contrary to common belief, this does not necessarily require expensive technological upgrades.
