Our Business MOT How Does It Actually Work

by | Apr 16, 2026 | For Clients

Following my recent email which mentioned our Pre-Sale MOT service, I’ve received a number of emails and calls asking, “How does it actually work?”

Firstly, a little context. The “MOT Service” is not just for IFAs that want to sell.

The foundations of Harrison Spence go back over 17 years. During that time, through offering a different industry perspective and candid, practical advice, we have supported many IFAs to improve their businesses.

Our service is entirely flexible. It can be as light-touch or as in-depth as you need it to be. There is no requirement for a monthly commitment and no expectation of a long-term contract. We are just as happy to assist with a single, specific piece of work as we are to support you on an ongoing basis.

Quite simply, we work around what you need.

Not sure where to start? As experienced consultants in the IFA sector, we are very good at identifying what needs to be done, and in what order. Too often, businesses try to tackle everything at once, or focus on the wrong areas, which can lead to wasted time and effort.

A common concern we encounter is: “I’ve paid for consultancy before and it didn’t really work.”

I understand that view. Unfortunately, any report that sits in a drawer has little or no value. Advice on its own is not enough. That is why our approach goes beyond simply producing a report.

We work with you to:

  • identify the key areas for improvement
  • build a practical, prioritised plan
  • and importantly, help implement that plan in a way that is agreed, measured, and non-disruptive to your business
  • or, if preferred, work with you on a single one-off project

In short, we focus on outcomes, not just recommendations.

What Can We Help With?

Our consultancy work covers a wide range of areas, including:

  • Increasing revenue per client
  • Strategic planning
  • Problem solving
  • Skills and staff development
  • Formulating marketing plans
  • Product development and implementation
  • Improving knowledge bases
  • Technological changes – AI in the workplace
  • Business valuations
  • Business separation (“business divorce”)

As mentioned previously, we have recently expanded our consultancy capability, bringing in additional resource with real, hands-on experience in building, buying, and selling IFA businesses. This allows us to support more firms in a practical and meaningful way.

If you would like to have a conversation about how this might apply to your own business, whether you have a specific issue in mind or simply want a fresh perspective, I would be very happy to speak with you.

As always, all first meetings are at our cost and there is no charge for an initial discussion.
